This little berry packs a big punch!

Relatively new to the mainstream market, goji berries are a superfood, known as gou qi zi, have been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years. They are used for eye health and clear vision, because they support the liver (the condition of the liver is reflected in the eyes). Goji berries also fortify the blood, so they are good for treating anemia. In addition, goji berries support the kidneys, so they can be helpful for tinnitus since, according to Chinese medicine, the kidneys and the ears are connected by the same energy meridian.

Goji berries are considered a complete source of protein and regarded as a top longevity and strength-building food. One of these tiny berries contains up to 21 trace minerals, including zinc, iron, copper, calcium, and 18 different amino acids. Ounce for ounce, goji berries contain more Vitamin C than oranges. High in anti-oxidants, this bright red berry fights free radicals and has major anti-inflammation properties. Snack on them raw, or add to your morning oatmeal.

You can find goji berries in our Trail Mix and our Green Berry Shake.

Try this recipe healing tea, featuring goji berries and mint.

Tea for Clear Eyes

This infusion is great for treating red, irritated eyes or puffiness. The mint is cooling, and in TCM it is used to brighten the eyes. Goji berries also contribute to eye health and nourish the yin.

2 cups (16 fl oz / 500ml) filtered water
1/4 cup (1 oz /30g) goji berries
Leaves from 1/2 bunch fresh peppermint or spearmint
Liquid stevia, for sweetening

In a small saucepan, bring the water to a boil over high heat. Immediately remove from the heat, add the goji berries and mint, and let steep for 10 minutes. Pour into a large mug, sweeten with stevia to taste, and enjoy.

Makes 1 serving.
